Richard (Maruza) Mubarikwa
Richard is a very talented artist. Born
in East Mashonaland, Zimbabwe, he started painting when still a child. He resides outside the capital, Harare, with
his wife and family.
Like many self-taught artists without easy access to galleries, Richard has depended mostly on tourists to sell his art. Now that tourism, once a thriving industry in Zimbabwe, is at an all-time low because of the political situation and the violence, Richard must travel to South Africa to make ends meet.
Even so, Richard devotes much of his time to the instruction of
other young artists in his area that show eagerness and talent. Along with Richard, a few of these nascent painters will
someday be counted among Zimbabwe's finest.
His oils bring to life Zimbabwe's magnificent landscapes. To depict everyday
life in the villages he knows so well, he uses bold strokes and bright colors, in a style that is whimsical and vibrant, yet conveys serenity.
